Harland F. Manes married Virginia Brown on 26 March 1919 at Newport, Campbell County, Kentucky. Virginia married 2nd Husband, Raymond Walter Wagoner on 5 June 1937 in Mahoning County, Ohio.

Harland Floyd Manes, an Akron policeman, was answering an accident call. The accident involved members of Charles "Pretty Boy" Floyd's gang. When he arrived on scene, he was shot by a member of the gang.

Officer Manes was shot and killed by investigating an accident. One of the vehicles involved in the accident contained members of the Pretty Boy Floyd Gang, who shot and killed Officer Manes when he arrived at the scene. The triggerman was arrested and executed for the murder.

Charles "Pretty Boy" Floyd and members of his gang were responsible for the murders of several law enforcement officers.

Officer Harland Manes of the Akron, Ohio, Police Department was shot and killed on March 9, 1930, while investigating an accident involving one of the gang members. Patrolman Ralph Castner of the Bowling Green, Ohio, Police Department was shot and killed on April 16, 1931, while attempting to arrest members of the gang. Special Agent Curtis Burke of the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, was shot and killed on July 22, 1931, while serving a federal search warrant on Pretty Boy Floyd in Kansas City, Missouri.

Officer Manes was survived by his wife and parents. He was buried in Rose Hill Burial Park, Akron, Summit County, Ohio.

Robert AMOS and Bert WALKER, along with two women, were arrested in Akron, Ohio following an automobile accident. WALKER was an escaped convict from Jefferson City, MO, having an unserved balance of 30 years against him. Almost immediately he drew a revolver and shot Officer Harland Manes before making his getaway. AMOS ran when the shooting started and also escaped, but both were captured the next morning at AMOS’s room on Lodi Street in Akron. WALKER was found hiding under a bed. MANES died from his injuries that same day.
